Willows juniors play in district finals
The Willows junior baseball all-stars took a pair of games from Palermo over the weekend to win their pool in the District 47 junior baseball all-stars tournament in Biggs.
Willows plays Central for the District 47 championship and the right to move on to the sectional tournament. Willows played Central on Tuesday in Paradise and will play tonight in Biggs for the second game of the best-out-of-three series.
Willows defeated Palermo 8-3 on Thursday thanks to the combined pitching efforts of Clark Love and Kyle Wyckoff. Love pitched the first three innings and gave up three runs while Wyckoff pitched the final four innings and gave up no runs while striking out four.
Meanwhile on offense, Ryan Welsh, Kyle Enos and Love all had two hits apiece while Casey Taylor had three. Willows scored three runs in the first inning on basehits by Love, Welsh, Alex Alves and Taylor.
After Palermo tied the score at 3-3 in the third, Willows added three more in the fifth on basehits by Taylor Collins, Enos and Taylor.
Willows extended its lead with two runs in the sixth inning on singles by Love, Welsh, Enos and Drake Matteson.
Palermo defeated Orland in the loser’s bracket on Saturday to advance to the finals and a rematch with Willows. Orland advanced to the consolation finals with a 14-11 win over Durham on Friday. No other information was available.
On Sunday, Willows scored the first three innings to give Enos all the runs he needed for a 5-2 victory.
Enos gave up single runs in the third and fourth innings, but shut down Palermo over the final three frames by facing only one batter over the minimum.
Love got Willows off to a good start with a leadoff triple in the first inning. He scored on Collins’ sacrifice fly.
In the second, Taylor walked and scored on Pierce Baker’s basehit.
Willows added two more in the third on an RBI double by Welsh and an RBI single by Matteson. Alves scored the final run for Willows in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk.
Welsh and Matteson both finished with two hits in the win.
