Swingin' in Colusa

Hamilton, Willows part of tournament action

With Friday's games canceled due to rain and an odd number of teams in the mix, the annual Colusa High softball tournament became more of a jamboree on Saturday, with the seven teams participating being scheduled for as many games as they wanted. The games were held concurrently at Lewis F. Tennant Field at Colusa High, and at the field at Egling Middle School.

Lindhurst 3, Hamilton 1

In their first contest at Tennant Field, Hamilton fell to Lindhurst 3-1, despite getting 16 strikeouts from flame-thrower Emily Stokes.

Lauren McCorkle singled in the third and came across on Stokes' run-scoring single for Hamilton's lone run.

Sonia Leal and Fallon Fumasi also provided singles for the Lady Braves.

Hamilton 1, Colusa 0

In a game pitting two of the area's top pitchers against each other, Hamilton took advantage of a pair of Colusa miscues to score a first-inning run, and Stokes blew through 17 Redskins batters, although Leal came up with the play of the game in the sixth.

After a lead-off walk and an error put Colusa runners on second and third with just one out, Leal snared a liner going to her right, and never broke stride until she touched third base to double-off the Redskins runner for an unassisted double play.

Corning 7, Willows 2

The Honkers took on the Cardinals with a 9:15 a.m. start, long before the sun had bothered to warm up the bats or the balls.

Brittany Ramsey accounted for two of Willows' three hits, banging a first-inning triple to center field and stroking a third-inning single, with Kayla Lutz lining a single to left in the fourth to drive in a run.

Willows other run scored on an error.

Meghan Myers pitched the full five innings, giving up just four hits while striking out nine.

Lindhurst 11, Willows 8

Against a good-hitting Lindhurst squad, Willows twice took leads but were unable to hold them.

Willows manufactured a six-run third inning with Ramsey, Savannah Bodie and Brianna Brothers all driving in runs, and Myers scoring a pair with an RBI-single.

Willows 9, Maxwell 5

Ashley Love was Willows' clutch contributor, going 3-for-4 and driving in a run in each at-bat. Brothers, Courtney Dicharry and Meghan Hughes each collected two hits.

Myers fanned 10, despite dealing with some wildness.

Willows 1, Durham 1

Willows coach Paul DiGrande reported Brothers used a sensational change-up and great control to spin a two-hitter with 11 K's.

The Honkers scored their run in the fourth when Myers singled to score Hughes, following an error and a walk.

Willows (2-2) traveled to play at Maxwell Tuesday, and hosts Hamilton Wednesday. The Lady Honkers then visit Hamilton City this weekend for the Hamilton Tournament.
