Willows shuts down Orland
Peters tosses no-hitter in All-Star action
Garrett Peters left no doubt Saturday why he was the man on the mound for the Willows 11-12 All Stars.
The lefty fireballer struck out 11 batters and held Orland hitless as Willows prevailed 6-0 in a game played in Chico.
Willows first hit of the ball game wound up being the only one it would need as Tyler Hall deposited a 3-2 pitch over the right-field fence for a second-inning solo home run. Willows added a second run when Marvin Price singled and came home on Gerald Peters’ RBI-double.
Jake Pence reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch in the third, and Greg Dicharry doubled and came home on Hall’s sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 after three innings of play.
Peters’ bid for a perfect game came to a halt in the fourth inning when he hit Tanner Thompson with a pitch. Orland moved its first runner into scoring position following a fielder’s choice and an error, but Willows was able to shut the door.
Willows plated its last two runs in the fourth. Nick Reed doubled and later scored on an error, and Adrian Sandoval drew a base on balls before eventually crossing the plate on a defensive miscue.
Orland’s Andrew Schermer tried his best to break up the no-no in the fifth when he lined a hard shot down the first-base line, but Willows first-sacker Ian Hampel snared it on a short hop and stepped on first for the out.
Hall homered and drove in a pair of runs for Willows. Reed and Dicharry each doubled, and Marvin Price added a single.
Sam Byerly struck out three batters for Orland, with Wiseman punching out a pair and Alex Wunsch, one.
Willows advanced to play Durham on Tuesday in the winner’s bracket, while Orland plays Chico Eastside in the consolation bracket at 5:30 p.m. today in Chico.
