Trojans take Doc Peterson, crown 4 champs
The Orland High wrestling squad hit the mats for the second time this season on Saturday when the top grapplers from the area converged on Orland High for the annual Doc Petersen Tournament on Saturday.
The Trojans captured the top spot in team scoring with 189.5 points, followed by Will C. Wood (168), Ukiah (164), Oroville (111) and Pleasant Valley (110.5) rounding out the top five.
Four Orland wrestlers turned in gold-medal performances, beginning with 113-pounder Hugo Punzo, who won by decision 4-0 over Will C. Wood's Manny Griego. Punzo's path to the top included falls against Corning's Devon Hiller and Pleasant Valley's Michael Briscoe.
Layne Embrey ruled the 132-pound class, after dominating Anderson's Aaron Evett 15-0 in the title bout.
Embrey reached the championship with pins of Cody Dimbat (Paradise), Josh Crowell (Central Valley) and Joey Gradek (Ukiah).
Lorenzo Landeros (160) took the top spot with a 12-6 win over Nathan Burns (West Valley). That followed falls against Mason Rodriguez (Winters) and Levi Hewitt (Anderson), and a 5-3 win over Kyle Case (Red Bluff).
Victor Raigoza (220) downed Evan Dalquist (Foothill) in the championship match. Along the way he pinned Chase Chartier (Shasta) and Cody Young (Shasta).
Also finishing among the top-five in their weight classes were Chris Martinez at 138 (3rd); Tyler Embrey at 145 (2nd); Cody Bundy at 170 (5th) and Cory Furtado at 195 (5th).
"I was really proud of our team's performance this weekend at the Doc," said coach Victor Perry. "The kids worked really hard this off-season and it showed. We were missing some key guys but the whole team stepped up."
Orland visits Anderson Wednesday, and wrestles this weekend in the Red Bluff Tournament.
