Reimers, Wackerman win Orland tennis tourney
Sophie Wackerman and Adam Reimers were among the winners at the inaugural Orland Independence Day Open Tennis Tournament, held over the weekend at the tennis courts in Vinsonhaler Park.
The tournament, which was put on by Jeanine Wackerman, is a fundraiser to help purchase uniforms and a ball machine for the Orland High School tennis teams, which have had a successful run under coach George Valentin. Both the boys and girls teams won the league championship this past year with the boys winning the section title for the second year in a row.
Sponsors for the event included All Seasons Screen Printing, Spence Trucking, Sulara Enterprises, Lavey Electric and Olivarez Honey Bees, Inc.
Sophie Wackerman defeated Colby Lavey 6-2, 7-5 for the women’s singles title while Angie Jones defeated Lindsey Schmeltzer 6-3, 6-4 in the consolation finals.
Reimers won the men’s gold singles event, defeating Cody Wackerman 6-2, 6-1. Reily Dingus defeated Caneane Salinthone 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in the consolation finals.
In the silver singles tournament, Javier Vaquera topped Lissette Gomez 6-3, 6-1 in the finals. Tony Whipple defeated Natalie Roessel in the consolation 6-2, 6-2.
In the gold doubles final, Mike Warren/Yakuo Warren def. Adam Reimers 6-1, 6-2.
Gustavo Banuelos and Cody Wackerman won the consolation gold doubles match.
In the silver doubles, Sophie Wackerman and Colby Lavey won the title. Reily Dingus and Tony Whipple won the consolation.
Other participants included Jason Molleson, Justin Donnelly, Shannon Donnelly-Ovard, Jeff Nelson, Tyler Donnelly, Brian Erickson, Katie Erickson, John Erickson, Scott and Josie Corporon, Linda Delarosa, Gabe Wackerman, Erica Vaquera, Kyle Goings, and Adam Acosta.
