Trojans shot down by Sutter
Huerta's 19 points paces Orland effort
Orland came out like a flash and faded just as quickly on Saturday against Sutter in the Northern Section Division IV boys basketball championship, losing 65-56 to the fourth-seeded Huskies in Acker Gym of California State University, Chico.
The No. 2 Trojans (20-9, 7-3 BVL) split with Sutter in Butte View League play and came out looking to dominate, leading by six at first quarter's end after forcing the Huskies to commit eight turnovers.
Sutter was much more effective than Orland offensively, however, settling into a groove and systematically moving the ball inside to 6-foot, 8-inch man-child Isaiah Bohman, who scored a freakish game high of 27 points to ruin the Trojans.
Leszek Ratajczak also scored 14 points and Elijah Smith had 10 for the Huskies.
As a team, Orland displayed better athleticism than Sutter, but could not maintain consistency on offense. The Trojans shot 23-for-70 from the field (33 percent) and Sutter connected on 26-of-49 (53 percent).
"We couldn't finish at the offensive end, that was a killer," said Jason Bragg, Orland coach.
The Huskies had more turnovers than Orland, 18 to 10, and less team speed, but ultimately the Trojans had no answer for Bohman underneath the basket.
José Huerta led Orland with 19 points and Ethan Schmeltzer turned in a strong all-around performance with 13 points and club highs in steals (5) and assists (3).
Freshman phenom Jud Sailsbery netted nine points and six rebounds and Orland post man Stephen Batchelder also scored eight points with nine rebounds.
"I'm proud of the boys, they played real hard," Bragg added.
The Trojans traveled to Modesto Christian on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF Northern California playoffs. Modesto is NorCal's No. 3 seed and Orland drew No. 14 as the NSCIF runner-up.
The Huskies (18-11, 6-4 BVL), who upset Butte View champion and the Northern Section's top-seeded Gridley to square off with Orland in the NSCIF finale, hosted the NorCal's No. 9 seed, Colfax, on Tuesday night in the first round of state. Sutter earned the No. 8 seed and a home berth as the NSCIF champion.
