Boys Basketball Report - Jan. 29

Cardinals crack Central Valley

Tanner McIntyre went on a scoring rampage to counter Central Valley's Luke Cassedy, scoring a team-leading 22 points Tuesday night to lead Corning's varsity boys basketball team to a 76-67 home victory.

The Falcons star nailed six 3-pointers to go off for a game-high 30, but McIntyre sunk three of his own from beyond the arc and had more help from his teammates than Cassedy got from his.

Corning made good on 17-of-22 free throws to help key the victory, and five Cardinals scored in double figures.

Matt Barr scored 12, Javier Piseno had 11 and teammates Cameron Nye and Anthony Monroe netted 10 apiece, shooting a combined 11-for-13 at the foul line.

McIntyre scored 15 of his points during the second quarter to fuel the club's 28-point onslaught. The Falcons trailed by 15 at the break and couldn't muster a comeback no matter what they did, in part because Corning didn't miss on its free throws.

The Cardinals (2-2 NAL, 15-5) travel to West Valley Friday and have a bye Tuesday.

Hamilton held down by Liberty

The Patriots from Liberty Christian came to do non-league battle Monday in Hamilton City, and the host Braves were unable to repel the enemy incursion, falling 50-39.

Hamilton was only able to muster a dozen first-half points, but regrouped to match that total in the third quarter and improve on it with 15 in the final period.

Brad Lohse's 14 points included a pair of threes, and Jesus Diaz also threw one down from long range in his 11 points.

The Braves were also not able to establish any sort of presence on the glass, coming down with just 18 rebounds.

The Braves (9-8, 2-0 MVL) hosted Williams (3-9, 0-2) Wednesday, and play at Biggs Friday. Wednesday they welcome Los Molinos.

Colusa loses heartbreaker in Rio

Redskins fans who made the trip to Rio Vista Tuesday got everything they paid for plus a little more, as Colusa and the Rams locked horns to tie 46-46 at the end of regulation, before Rio Vista took the one-point 51-50 overtime victory.

Colusa coach Brady Meyers reported that Rio Vista jumped out to an 8-point lead in the first quarter, before the Redskins outscored them 14-2 in the second period by getting into the paint on offense and shutting the Rams down defensively.

The coach said Colusa took a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter, only to have Rio Vista find its range from long distance while the Redskins only managed a single basket.

A foul as time ran out sent the Rams to the line, where they were able to tie the score and force the overtime period. Colusa continued struggling from the field, only being able to score in the extra frame from the free-throw line, and could not sink the game-winner despite a couple of good looks at the basket.

David Mobley picked up 12 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter, Nico Valencia added 10 points, and Hayden Meyers grabbed nine boards.

Colusa (5-12, 0-3) returns home Friday to play Live Oak (4-11, 0-2), and then plays at Pierce Wednesday.

Herlong harasses Elk Creek

In an evenly matched ballgame Tuesday, the Elks took a 23-18 lead into the locker room at the half but were unable to keep it up for the second half, where they were outscored 34-16 to lose 52-39 at home.

Trevor Butler took game-scoring honors with 21 points and completed another double-double with 11 rebounds, with Andrew Burrows adding 10 points and Matt Criner distributing four assists.

Elk Creek took its 2-18, 0-4 record into play Friday hosting Providence, and plays Tuesday at Downieville.

Maxwell outmatched by Paradise Adventist

The Panthers hosted Paradise Adventist Tuesday and came up on the short end of a 46-40 score, despite 14 points from John Davis and 10 from Sammy Alcaraz.

Free throws, or the lack of being able to convert them, came heavily into play, as the Cougars were 14-of-18 from the line, while the Panthers were 9-of-16.

Maxwell fell to 11-8 overall and 1-2 in the NVL. They play host to Westwood (12-6, 2-2) Friday and get on the bus to Hayfork Tuesday.

Willows downed by Durham

The Honkers trailed just 47-43 entering the final period at Durham Tuesday, but were outscored 17-10 over the last eight minutes to lose 64-53.

No statistics were available before press time.

The Honkers (9-10, 2-1) host Pierce (8-7, 2-1) Friday, and visit Rio Vista Tuesday.
