Trojans pin down D2 wrestling crown
There's strength in numbers, and after their showing in the Division II wrestling championships at Orland High on Saturday, the Trojans will be plenty strong at this weekend's Northern Section California Interscholastic Federation Masters Tournament being held in Redding.
To nobody's surprise, the Trojans ran away with the Division II championship yet again, claiming nine individual championships and qualifying wrestlers in all 14 weight classes.
Orland's 270.5 points was in another stratosphere compared to runner-up Anderson's 182.5. The remaining order of finish was Sutter (169), Corning (121.5), Wheatland (109), Lassen (83.5), Gridley (42), Live Oak (38.5), Winters (38) and Central Valley (19).
Stepping to the top step of the winner's podium at the D2 meet were Hugo Punzo (108 lbs.), Layne Embrey (115), Hermilo Esquivel (122), Jimmy Gamboa (134), Christian Wathen (147), Justin Hill (154), Tyler Gil (172), Fernando Infante (222) and Victor Raigoza (287).
Earning silver finishes were Luis Hernandez (184) and Jake Funk (197), while Lorenzo Landeros (128) and Dylan Hill (162) finished third.
Coming in fifth was Tyler Embrey (140).
