Lady Trojans hold off Willows
Glenn County rivals battle on pitch in Orland
An Angelica Moralez first-half goal was the one of 23 shots that went in for the Orland High girls soccer team Friday, but one was enough as the Trojans shut down the Honkers 1-0.
Orland coach Tim Milhorn said the Trojans dominated most of the game but couldn't put the ball away, and wished he would have seen better finishes from a 23-4 shooting advantage. "It's frustrating to see so many attempts but so little result. I give the Willows girls credit, though, they never gave up."
Orland's shooters were frustrated as well, learning the hard way that soccer - like so many other sports - is also a game of inches, as two shots went off the frame and Melissa Mercado and Marlene Gutierrez each saw headers go just wide.
"They outplayed us most of the game," said Willows coach Bud Ramirez, who saw his Lady Honkers lose by one goal for the second day in a row.
Sutter 5, Orland 0
When is being shut out 5-0 actually a positive outcome? When you hold powerful Sutter to its lowest goal total against a Butte View League opponent.
Sutter took a 3-0 halftime lead Thursday in Orland, with the help of two "own goals" deflected by Orland defenders into their own net.
Coach Lazaro Garcia said the Trojans played great soccer against one of the best teams in the section. "The score doesn't reflect out hustle and never-say-die play in the match," Garcia said. "This team never gives up."
Trojan keeper Esme Esquivel made 12 saves.
Orland (5-5-2, 3-3-2 BVL) played Oroville on the road Monday and travels to Gridley Thursday.
