Orland stopped in section tennis finals

The 20-30 mph gusts were not the only things blowing last week. The winds of change blew across the Northern Section team tennis championships as well, when Orland fell short against Live Oak 4-5 in the section finals Oct. 28 in Orland. The loss snapped Orland's 30-match winning streak against Division II opponents.

The Lady Trojans got wins at the top-two spots in singles play, as Sophie Wackerman defeated Jennifer Dewitt 6-3, 6-1, and Savanah Sandate downed Daniela Dumitras 6-0, 6-2.

In the other singles matches, Erica Vaquera lost a tough match with Alora Sutcliffe 6-3, 5-7, 5-7; Taylor Goings came up short to Fermina Chavez 2-6, 5-7; Meredith Longoria lost to Melissa Anderson 1-6, 0-6; and Cassandra Carper was bested 0-6, 1-6 by Kayla Morris.

The Trojans needed all three doubles matches for the win.

Orland just about completed the improbable sweep of doubles play, as Wackerman/Vaquera posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Dewitt/Dumitras, and Sandate/Goings pulled off a thrilling three-set win 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. In the third and deciding match, however, Longoria/Berenice Medina were upended by Anderson/Lucero Topete 4-6, 4-6.

Orland finished the season with a record of 17-2.
