Cardinals 4th on Division II mats
The black and red of Corning High School will be well represented in Redding this weekend, as a total of 11 Cardinal wrestlers qualified for the Northern Section California Interscholastic Federation Masters Tournament.
The qualifiers earned their spots by placing in the Division II tournament wrestled Saturday at Orland High.
Those wearing the Corning singlets this weekend will be Devon Hiller (106 lbs.), Martin Solano (113), Elias Vallejo (120), Nate Fultz (126), Sean Lowe (132), Aiden Nye (138), Dakota Henry (152), Daniel Welborn (170), Mario Cervantes (182), Noah Hall (195) and Noe Franco (220).
In Orland, the cardinals finished fourth in the team standings with 121.5 points. They trailed champions Orland (270.5), Anderson (182.5) and Sutter (169), but finished ahead of Wheatland (109), Lassen (83.5), Gridley (42), Live Oak (38.5), Winters (38) and Central Valley (19).
Welborn was Corning's top individual finisher, claiming second in the 172-pound class, losing to champion Tyler Gil from Orland.
Third-place showings were turned in by Nye (140) and Hall (197), with fourth place going to Vallejo (122), Fultz (128), Lowe (134) Cervantes (184) and Franco (222).
Earning a trip to the Masters with a fifth-place finish were Hiller (108), Solano (115) and Henry (154).
