Trojans tennis trounces BVL foes

The Butte View League may need to consider changing its name to the OVL for the "Orland View League," because the BVL championships held Thursday and Friday at Orland High were just that.

Four of the players who earned all-league honors in singles play wore the blue and black, and from the semifinals on, it was literally all Orland.

Top-seeded Johnny Vazquez won the singles championship with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over fellow Trojan Ray Hecox, after Hecox had banished Mauricio Ziranda 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinal match. Vazquez advanced to the championship with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Guillermo Banuelos in the semis, with all four being named All-BVL.

The Trojans' other two entrants - Draven Yahn and Joseph Glover - suffered first-round losses.

Also earning spots on the all-league team were Gridley's Greg Davis and Ryker Canada, along with Sutter's Billy Thompson and Sam Ruxton.

Doubles was also Trojan-heavy, with Vazquez/Hecox posting a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over teammates Banuelos/Ziranda.

Jimmy Gamboa and Eric Anguiano won two matches before being ousted by Sutter's pairing of Ruxton/Shelby Arvizu.
