Trojans earn team silver at Tim Brown
Wrestling well at some of the state's biggest meets is nothing new for the Trojans, and their showing at the weekend's 15th annual Tim Brown Memorial Invitational was another example of "business as usual."
The Orland High varsity wrestling squad finished second behind only Folsom in the team competition at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, and also crowned an individual champion in Hermilo Esquivel, who dominated his competition in the 120-pound class.
Also placing for the Trojans were Tyler Gil, 170 (4th); Layne Embrey, 113 (5th); Victor Raigoza, 285 (5th); Christian Wathen, 145 (6th); and Hugo Punzo, 106 (8th).
Esquivel was barely tested in his run to the top step of the podium. He began with a pin of Daniel Driver from Grace M. Davis High, and followed that up with a 17-7 major decision over Tracy High's Albert Landeros.
Orland's "Baby-faced Asassin" then finished with a flourish, pinning both Antelope High's Branden Matu and Henley High's Zech Bresser to take the title.
The Trojans take the mat Wednesday to host Wheatland in a home dual.
