Y-S Fair opens today

The Yuba-Sutter Fair kicks off today.

The midway music is playing, the corn dogs are battered and the carnival lights are on. Stuffed animal prizes are prime for the picking and the livestock pens are full of sights, sounds and smells.

When the gates open at 5:30 p.m. today, fairgoers will find a mix of old and new.

Familiar favorites include the Miss Yuba-Sutter, Miss Teen Yuba-Sutter and the Mini-Miss scholarship competitions; the tuff trucks and mud boggs, professional bull riding and the demolition derby.

Flo the Clown is back in action, along with new midway acts of Matt the Maverick and Spike McGuire. Hungry fairgoers can stick with the staples of corn dogs and cotton candy or try the new additions of fresh fruit cups, deep-fried burritos and deep-fried desserts.

The National Weather Service is forecasting mild summer weather for the five days of fair, with highs in the high 80s and low 90s through Sunday.

The theme of this year's Yuba-Sutter Fair is "Honor-Glory-Tradition." Tributes to the men and women who protect the red, white and blue are all around the grounds.
