Woman killed in crash on her 80th birthday

A Tiburon woman died in a single-vehicle accident at 6:25 p.m. Monday on Interstate 5 near Artois.

The crash resulted in the death of Christine Whiting on her 80th birthday.

Whiting was driving alone about 75 mph in the passing lane when, for unknown reasons, she drifted onto the shoulder, according to a California Highway Patrol report. The car crossed both southbound lanes after she overcorrected her steering, the CHP said, then broke through a wire fence, rolled and landed in a ditch. Whiting was ejected from the vehicle, blue-gray 2008 Honda Civic; she was not wearing a seat belt.

Whiting’s body was taken to the Glenn County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy will be performed. The accident is under investigation by the CHP.
