Woman nearly beaten to death

A Corning woman is in stable condition after being beaten with a wooden club by her boyfriend on Sunday, according to the Tehama County Sheriff's Office.

Humberto Sandoval Moctezuma, 40, was arrested in Oroville and booked into Tehama County Jail on suspicion of attempted homicide and violation of domestic violence restraining order. Bail was set at $1,010,000, the Sheriff's Department reported.

The children of Susan Cortez, 29, called 911 to report their mother had been beaten and was bleeding from her head, said the Sheriff's Department.

When deputies arrived at the Valley Vista Drive residence, they found Cortez with a fractured skull, arm, facial bones and a ruptured spleen, said sheriff's deputies.

Deputies said they found a wooden club at the scene they believe was used to beat Cortez.

The boyfriend, identified by the department as Moctezuma, had left the area before deputies arrived.

He was located by Butte County sheriff's deputies on Oro Dam Blvd in Oroville and was arrested, then transported back to the Tehama County Jail.
