More than 90 attend first 5K/10K run
More than 90 people attended the Glenn County Resource Conservation District's first Run Your Tail Off 5K/10K Run or Walk last week.
They went to Black Butte Lake near Orland on May 5 to run and walk on trails around the lake starting in the Buckhorn Recreation Area.
The top 10,000-meter runner was Heladio Punzo, while Caleb Skelton won the 5,000-meter run.
Top Tail honors went to Billie Beckett, who will be honored in the "Hall of Fame" for what is to become an annual event, RCD officials said. All are from Glenn County.
The purpose of the run was to raise money for the district's "Connect With Kids" program that promotes watershed awareness in local schools and with youth organizations.
It is run by Watershed Coordinator Liz Brackmann, who noted $1,000 was raised through sponsorships and participants.
Members of the Orland Volunteer Fire Department and Glenn Amateur Radio Society provided safety measures, and the Natural Resources Conservation District and Black Butte Lake Park management presented activities and materials to increase watershed stewardship and water safety with the help of "Bobber," the park's water safety dog.
C.K. Price Middle School's Builders Club sold barbecued hot dogs and fruit at the event to raise funds for their projects, Brackmann added.
The Second Annual Run Your Tail Off event is scheduled for May 4, 2013 at Black Butte Lake.
