News Briefs: Poetry recitation contest this week in Marysville
Local students will be reciting poetry at the Poetry Out Loud competition on Wednesday and Thursday at the Lee Burrows Arts Center, 630 E St., Marysville.
Sponsored by the Yuba-Sutter Regional Arts Council, the contest is designed to encourage youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation.
The contests will start at 6 p.m. each day, with Sutter County students performing on Wednesday and Yuba County students on Thursday.
Battle of Bands auditions slated in Marysville
Auditions will be held Feb. 27, 28 and 29 at Marysville High School for the Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts 2012 Battle of the Bands contest for college and high school student bands.
Bands will be allowed to audition by appointment only from 4 p.m.-6 p.m.
Bands performing any musical genre, including rock, alternative, country, screamo, Christian and metal are welcome to try out.
Those advancing will be invited to play on April 21 at the Allyn Scott Youth and Community Center in Marysville. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top bands.

Free gospel concert Saturday at Bethel AME Church
An African American Celebration and free gospel concert will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bethel AME Church, located at 115 Fifth St., Marysville.
The program will feature the Bethel AME Choir, the Sons of Salvation and the Mt. Olivet Baptist Choir.
