Golf tourney brings cash for Kiwanis
The turnout was smaller than last year, but the 2008 Orland Kiwanis Golf Tournament proved to be a fun event, according to organizers.
Kiwanis member Jane King said 16 teams participated in the tournament at the Sevillano Links Golf Course at Rolling Hills Casino near Corning.
“Everyone had a super time,” she said. “It was a good day with a breeze and was not totally hot.”
There were lots of raffle prizes and the Kiwanis made about $4,000 which it plans to split among the Orland High wrestling and golf teams and Just for Kids and the Kiwanis House in Sacramento where families of ill children are helped.
King said the Orland High students helped the golfers with their clubs and met them at the entrance.
The golf carts provided by Sevillano Links were “fantastic,” she said, and the lunch at Carlino’s Restaurant was great.
King said she judged a hole-in-one, but nobody made it at her hole. Four teams made it on the green, she added, but most ended up in the rough, and one ball went through the tent and another hit a golf court.
These goofs aside, the golfers enjoyed the event which was well organized by golf pro Brian Dahmer, King said.
Raffle prizes included coolers with beer, T-shirts, gift baskets and more. A silent auction also featured a tour on the Shasta Dinner Train, a signed print of Tiger Woods and golf rounds at Butte Creek Country Club and Tuscan Ridge Golf Course.
There were so many prizes it took a while to hand them out, King said.
Teams included four golfers to a team at a fee of $400 a team. All of the money went to kids causes since Kiwanis is an international organization that promotes projects for youth.
The 2007 tournament brought out more golfers because the Kiwanis Tournament was the first one played on the John Daly designed course, King said.
It raised about $6,000 which the Orland chapter gave to the Orland High wrestling team for its trip to Hawaii.
However, King said this year it decided to share the wealth with the other groups as a means of helping them with their needs.
This was the second annual golf tournament and it was held earlier this year since last year it was played at the end of August.
