Ready or not here they come
Candidates are getting ready to start campaigning for the June 8 primary election in Glen County.
The deadline to file papers was Friday in races for county assessor-clerk recorder, district attorney, sheriff-coroner, county superintendent of schools and the District 4 seat on the Board of Supervisors.
Candidates running for the District 2 superivisorial seat have until Wednesday to file.
The date is extended because the incumbent, Tracey Quarne, is not seeking re-election. Instead, he wants to be the next Glenn County superintendent of schools.
In what is expected to be a contentious race, Quarne is challenging incumbent Arturo Barrera. If re-elected, it would Barrera's second term.
Five candidates have filed for supervisor in District 2, which represents Orland.
Running in this wide-open race are current Orland Mayor Wade Elliott, who just started his second year of a four-year term on the council, retired printer Stanley Cooper, business owner Dwight Foltz, real estate broker Sharon Nord, and former Orland Mayor Mike Yalow.
The line up to represent Willows in the District 4 race for supervisor are incumbent Mike Murray and the Rev. Keith Corum. It would be Murray's second term if he wins.
Sheryl Thur, who was appointed to fill Vince Minto's term when he retired in December 2008, is up for election for the first time against Jolleen Whitsett, a title and escrow manager from Orland.
For the first time in 20 years, county District Attorney Robert Holzapfel will not be alone on the ballot. He will be up against Robert Maloney, who beat Holzapfel for the same job in 1978.
The only uncontested spot on the ballot is the sheriff-coroner's positions. Sheriff Larry Jones will be unchallenged at the ballot box this year.
