Orland pedestrian critical after accident
Rigoberto Garcia Alvarez, 74, of Orland, remains in critical
condition at Enloe Medical Center after being struck by a vehicle Thursday night.
The Orland Police Department responded to the call at the
corner of East Swift Street and Woodward Avenue at approximately 9:05 p.m.
Thursday.
An investigation determined that Alvarez was wearing all dark clothing and was crossing at the offset intersection that has no painted crosswalks or streetlights.
A 1995 Dodge van driven by Toby Truel, 51, was traveling northbound on Woodward. Just before the accident Truel's passenger, Alexander Truel, 16, shouted a warning and Toby Truel swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid striking Alvarez, but was unable to avoid him.
An off-duty paramedic was on scene when officers arrived and was treating Alvarez for head trauma as well as an arm injury.
Alvarez was transported to Enloe by ambulance, and remained in critical condition as of 12:30 p.m. Friday.
