Avenue of Lights tonight

The ninth annual Avenue of Lights will take place from 5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. today and Sunday, and Dec. 21-23 at the Glenn County Fairgrounds in Orland, 221 E. Yolo St. The cost is $10 per car.

Stop in at the North Pole Lodge following the drive-through to see Santa, special theme trees, and Christmas displays.

A snack bar will be open with a holiday menu of hot chocolate, popcorn, and other treats.

Volunteers are needed. Please call Olga Peterson at 893-9218; Merri Caywood at 865-9663 for route displays; or Mo Clark at 865-4993 for North Pole Lodge trees.

Volunteers may also go directly to the fairgrounds and ask for the Route Leader, Doyle Shippelhoute.

Dance at the Moose Lodge

A Christmas dance will be held from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at the Orland Moose Lodge, 605 Fifth St.

Platinum Club meets Thursday

The Platinum Club for Glenn County Seniors will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday inside the large conference room at Glenn Medical Center, 1133 W. Sycamore St., Willows.

Mike Cammarano, director of Imaging, and Sheree Zimmerman, mammography technician, will present "Mammograms - The Painless Test That Can Save Your Life."

Meeting includes breakfast buffet prepared by the dietary department.

Thursday deadline for contest

The Department of Fish and Game and International Sportsmen's Expositions have teamed up to offer a youth essay contest. Holders of a junior hunting license and are youth under 16 who have valid 2012 hunter education certificates are eligible.

To enter, contestants need to submit an essay of 500 words or less on what "Passing on the Tradition" means to them. Participants are encouraged to write about conservation, sportsmanship and ethics.

Essays will be reviewed and scored by the stars of National Geographic's Wild Justice TV show.

The winner will be notified by phone and must be present with his or her parents for the grand prize on Jan. 12, 2012 in Sacramento.

Entries must be received by Thursday.
