Man arrested after police pursuit
A Colusa man who reportedly crashed his vehicle into another car while attempting to flee from police during a high-speed chase through several residential neighbors on Monday, is behind bars and staring at felony charges.
Todd Gregory Spangler, 38, of the 300 block of Eighth Street, was arrested on Tuttle Lane, between Bridge and First streets, on suspicion of evading police causing injury, hit and run causing injury and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol causing injury, Colusa County Jail booking records state.
Colusa police were dispatched to a reported domestic violence call at the corner of Eighth and Oak streets around 6:30 p.m., Lt. Ross Stark said.
"It turned out to be more of an argument over a computer than domestic violence," Stark said.
Spangler reportedly fled the scene in a 2008 Hyundai Tiburon.
Police located the car moments later driving southbound on Seventh Street. It turned onto Eighth Street, continuing south, then turned east on to Carson Street, Stark said.
The driver reportedly accelerated to speeds of 60 mph with pedestrians and on-coming traffic in the roadway. the police said.
"There was a group of kids playing baseball in the street and the officer slowed down for safety," Stark said.
The car continued at high speeds, running stop signs at Fifth, Third and Bridge streets, the police reported.
"He ran the red traffic light at Sioc and collided head-on with a Toyota Camry," said Stark, referrig to Spangler.
The driver of the Toyota, Paula Beauchamp, 45, of Ukiah, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Colusa Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released. An unnamed passenger in the Toyota was not hurt, Stark said.
"Immediately following the collision, the suspect jumped out of his now-disabled car and ran away," Stark said.
Spangler was arrested by Colusa police minutes later.
Spangler was also treated at Colusa Regional for minor injures and released, Stark said.
Stark said the officer involved "followed policy" regarding high-speed pursuits.
Spangler was still in custody Tuesday. Bail is set at $50,000.
