Letter: Happy 20th birthday, ADA

Join me in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act.

This bill was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush July 26, 1990, 17 years after the landmark civil rights, anti-discrimination "504" law saying people with disabilities are equal citizens.

Things are not perfect. More can be done to make our community accessible, so people with disabilities can be independent and productive citizens. However, on this 20th birthday we want to let our fellow citizens know that because of this law, the world is a better place for everyone.

Here are just a few examples: Curb cuts, mothers with strollers and kids with skate boards enjoy sidewalks; ramps, travelers with suitcases and delivery people with hand carts can get over steps; automatic door openers, arms full of papers, boxes, packages can breeze through doors.

There are now large print, TV captions and beautiful sign language. Mainstream TV now advertises "Dragon" voice-operated computers for everyone, while decades ago they were a rehab device for people with cerebral palsy who couldn't talk but had lots to say.

So much new technology and ease of movement has come from the disability movement. We are happy to share our gifts with you.
