Letter: Post office shows no pride

Our post office is a place we all want to be proud of. After all, it is the center of Orland. The reason why our city was given a name in 1875.

For years, prominent men in our community were appointed postmaster. Citizens of Orland were thrilled when, during President John F. Kennedy’s term, money was allocated to build the building at Main and Mill streets. The Orland post office established on May 5, 1876 finally had a permanent home.

Sadly, it is a place now which I cannot be proud of. Its tile floors are filthy with dirt and chewing gum. Its walls are grimy and in need of paint. The carpet that greets you is also filthy, thread bare and generally littered. The tiny garden at the front entry is full of cigarette butts, bits of paper and leaves left over from the fall of ’07. I also understand there are mornings when our flag is not raised promptly at opening time and encouraging words to clean up go unheeded.

This citizen of the Orland area regrets that the employees of the U.S. Postal Service have no pride in our community and allow this all to be so. Too bad that we no longer have prominent Orlanders appointed postmaster. They cared about our town.

Ok Opie, This is the last I'm going to say on this subject. I too, volunteer in my community. I volunteer 24/7, 365 days a year with our youth. "Be the change you want to see in the world." Gandhi If you want others to take more pride in their community, lead by example, no need to cut down others who don't. Orlander

Oh ya, maybe you are right. I don't understand why Joanne wrote both the Chico ER and the Orland papers? Couldn't she have just mentioned her feelings to the Orland Postmaster? I think it was Joanne that started the public mud toss. Yes she does give her time, and thanks for that, but I don't get this slam on the good people at the Post Office. SO go expose some of those lazy dirty dealing county critters if you want to expose some slackers.

Hey Orlander, for your information Opie does volunteer, MANY hours a week. I have volunteered many hours doing all sorts of things, helping out with the Little League, retirement homes and wherever else there seems to be a need. If I have to I will clean up the post office too, anything else you need me to do? Rake your yard, walk your dog? As for the welfare check, would it be too much to ask for a check recipient to help if they are ABLE. I understand that the welfare check is not much, but I, as well as you I presume, pay a fair share of taxes for programs for people that need it. Even you would have to admit that there are way too many that take advantage of these programs. That share of taxes would do wonders for the education of your children wouldn't it. Maybe we need to bring back some of FDR's programs back to this broken country. I tried my best to attack the issue and not the person, see if you can do the same!

Opie needs to go clean up with Joanne too it sounds like. My kids do not spit their gum on the floor nor do they leave any trash behind. Why would you make such a stupid statement about welfare recipents? Just because they recieve a check they need to do more clean up or beautification than any other resident? Maybe you should gather up your well-to-do friends and get it done yourself so the welfare reciepents can sit and wait for there check.

Some things never change dear Joanne, still riding that high horse, always the first to criticize, and delegate someone else to do the manual labor. Let's all return to the past and appoint her highness Postmistress, then there will be a permanent person who could make sure only leaves from fall 2008 come to rest amongst the Post Office shrubs.

It looks to me like TJW is the one throwing cigarette butts in the garden and Orlander's kids spitting gum on the floor. They both are looking for Joanne to volunteer her time to clean up someone elses mess. How about helping her instead of harassing her. Or better yet, how about making some recients of a welfare check do a little trash pickup and city beautification before they get that check which is paid for by all of us tax payers.

Well said TJW. Everytime I go to the post office, the place in clean and the workers are ALWAYS friendly to me and everyone else! My kids always want to come with me to listen to "The duck man". Joanne, you can spend some of your extra time to clean, paint, and clean up the cigerette buds. signed Proud of our local post office

I think the post office is fine. I think the workers there are polite and work hard. I guess some people have nothing better to do than to critisise others. Here is a thought, Joanne. Get yourself a broom and a mop and do some voluteer work. I sure they will welcome your help. Maybe you'll get your picture in the paper.
