Wondering about the wondrous weather

When I first started writing this column, the darn computer wouldn’t talk to me.  I could not figure out what I was doing wrong, since the computer really likes to talk.  I finally phoned my friend, Linda, and found out that I was typing into nothingness because I hadn’t told the computer where to go.  Sometimes I would really like to tell this computer where to go, but then I’d be back typing on the old manual Royal typewriter which would be the pits.  Now that I know where I am, I’ll actually start a column.

There is an old saying that tells us “we will have weather whether or not.”  That is surely the truth whatever the season. This last winter the cold got into my bones worse than any other year.  And I lived in Nebraska for the first 12 years of my life.  I still don’t know if Spring has sprung, because you can’t tell from one day to the next whether it will be hot or cold.  I heard the other day that Wink, Texas had the honor of being the hottest town in the U.S.A. this last year while Embarrass, Minnesota was the coldest.  I think if I were the coldest spot in America I would be embarrassed myself.  There is another town in Minnesota that has the all-time record—Caribou, Mn.  I wonder if Wisconsin and Minnesota try to outdo each other in the cold area.  Are Michigan, Vermont, New Hampshire and even Maine still in competition?  Good old California is a wonderful State in which to live.

Now that Easter is over, did you hear or read that this was the earliest date for Easter since 1913.  It will not be that early again until the year 2160.  That’s OK since it really was too early this year.  I didn’t have time to even buy a new hat.

Last Wednesday the Orland Women’s Improvement Club planted a tree at the Orland High School honoring Evelyn Gleason as the Club’s Volunteer of the Year.  This honor represents a woman who has accomplished a lot for our community, and Evelyn certainly fits the bill.  She is one of those few people who take a day a week to visit with anyone who is ill or housebound or even just old and needing friendship.  When you are young you do not realize how important it is for older persons to have someone who comes on a regular basis to stop and say “Hello”.   Thank you, Evelyn, for sharing your time with someone who needs companionship or who is ill and needs reassurance.  Evelyn is also a hard worker within the club doing her share and more in all phases of the organization.

Don’t forget to visit the Fairgrounds tomorrow to view the Best in the West show.  But, hurry, hurry, hurry because the show only runs from 10 a.m.. to 4 p.m. and there is lots to see.  Do you remember when it used to be called the Harvest Festival and was held in October, I think.  That show lasted for two days each year.  So drag yourself out of bed in the morning, and stop by the Fairgrounds and mingle with the crowd.  You might even learn something new.
